Portable and tent saunas

The short answer

Portable saunas are fold-away fabric enclosures you sit in with your head outside, heated by a small steam generator or infrared panels. Irish retailers list them from about €180 to €360. They plug into a normal socket and reach about 45 to 60°C, cooler than a sauna cabin.

Tent saunas

A tent sauna is a heavy canvas or synthetic tent with a small wood-burning stove inside and a flue through the roof. They're popular for camping, wild swimming spots and gardens, and get much hotter than plug-in portable saunas, with real steam from stones on the stove.

  • Treat it like any stove: keep it clear of the tent walls, use the flue guard, and never leave it lit unattended.
  • Pitch it on level, non-flammable ground, away from buildings, hedges and overhanging branches.
  • Carbon monoxide: make sure the flue is fitted properly and the tent is ventilated.

Common questions

Are portable saunas worth it?

They're a cheap way to try sauna-style heat at home and fold away when you're done. But they heat your body inside a fabric tent, mostly with your head outside, and run cooler than a sauna cabin, so they're not the same experience.

How much is a portable sauna in Ireland?

We found portable steam saunas from about €180 to €200 and a portable infrared sauna at about €360 from Irish retailers (October 2026).

How hot does a portable sauna get?

The models we found list a maximum of about 60°C, with one steam model saying it typically heats to about 45°C. A traditional sauna cabin runs at about 66 to 91°C.

What is a tent sauna?

A heavy canvas tent heated by a small wood-burning stove with a flue, used outdoors for camping or in the garden. It gets much hotter than a plug-in portable sauna and needs the same care as any wood-burning stove.

Can a portable sauna plug into a normal socket?

Yes. The steam model we found is rated at 1,050 W, well within a standard 13 A socket. Use a socket on its own rather than an extension lead.
