Sauna heaters

The short answer

Most home saunas use an electric heater with stones, sized to the room's volume: an 8 kW heater typically suits about 7 to 12 m³. Electric heaters start at about €490 to €500 from the sellers we checked; wood-burning stoves from about €880. Stones, controls and wiring are often extra.

The more stones a heater holds, the more heat it stores and the softer the steam. See combi saunas for heaters with a steamer.

Sizing a heater

  1. Measure the inside of the sauna and multiply length × width × height to get the volume in m³.
  2. Add 20 to 25% if it has glass doors or windows, uninsulated walls, tiles or stone, or stands outdoors.
  3. Pick a heater rated for that volume. Manufacturers give a range for each heater.

Harvia Virta Combi HL90S9 kW8 to 14 m³

Loghouse fits a 9 kW Harvia heater as standard in its outdoor saunas. See what size sauna for room sizes.

Controls

  • Built-in controls: dials on the heater for temperature and a timer. Simple and cheaper.
  • Separate control panel: mounted outside the sauna, often with a start-time setting. Some heaters require one.
  • App or Wi-Fi control: lets you start heating from your phone, so it's ready when you get home.

Prices in euro as listed in October 2026, from Timbertrove and Finnmark Sauna's Irish store (Finnmark is a UK company). Where a heater comes in several sizes, the price is usually for the smallest. Timbertrove showed the Vega as sold out. Stones are usually extra: about €45 to €51 per 20 kg box.

Fitting a heater

  • Electric heaters need a dedicated circuit, installed and certified by a registered electrical contractor. See electrical requirements.
  • Follow the safety clearances in the manual: distances to walls, benches and the ceiling, and a guard rail around the heater.
  • Wood-burning stoves need a properly installed flue and clearances to combustible materials.

Common questions

What size sauna heater do I need?

Work out the volume of the sauna (length × width × height inside) and choose a heater rated for it. For example, Harvia rates its Vega 8 kW for 7 to 12 m³. Add 20 to 25% to the volume for glass doors or windows, uninsulated walls, tiles or stone, or an outdoor sauna in a cold climate.

How much does a sauna heater cost in Ireland?

Electric heaters start at about €490 to €500 from the sellers we checked, and premium models cost €1,000 to €1,700 or more. Wood-burning stoves started at about €880. Stones, controls and installation are often extra.

What is the best sauna heater brand?

Harvia, Helo, Narvi and HUUM are widely sold in Ireland and Europe. Choose by size, controls, how many stones it holds (more stones give softer steam) and the warranty, rather than brand alone.

Do sauna heaters need three-phase power?

Not usually in homes. Many heaters can run on single-phase or three-phase supplies. Larger heaters need a bigger single-phase circuit, so check the heater's supply requirements with a registered electrician.

Is a wood-burning sauna stove better than electric?

It's different rather than better: it needs no electrics but needs a flue, firewood and lighting each time. See wood-fired vs electric saunas.
